Selecting a Long-Term CPA Relationship

Other Situations · 1 min read

Off-season CPA selection allows deeper conversations about specialization, fit, and whether the practitioner can handle your situation well, while building institutional knowledge over time.

The best time to find a CPA is before you urgently need one. During tax season (January through April), experienced CPAs are at capacity and less likely to take new clients with complex situations. Off-season outreach -- May through November -- gives you access to CPAs who have time for a real conversation about your situation and whether they are a good match.

Look for specialization, not just credentials. All CPAs are licensed, but their expertise varies enormously. A CPA who specializes in small business taxation may not be the right fit for international reporting, and vice versa. Ask about the types of clients they primarily serve and the specific tax situations they handle most frequently.

A long-term CPA relationship compounds in value. A CPA who knows your history can spot opportunities a new preparer would miss -- a loss carryforward expiring, a Roth conversion window opening, or an entity restructuring that makes sense given your trajectory. This institutional knowledge takes time to build and cannot be replicated by switching preparers annually.

The tradeoff: Taking your time means you can be selective, but indefinite delay means you miss planning opportunities in the interim. Set a decision timeline even if there is no external deadline forcing one.
